Give your EV the sound of a combustion engine
EV·ENGINE reads your GPS speed and synthesises an engine to match it in real time — revs rise as you accelerate, the gearbox changes up and down, and it barks on the overrun. No sensors, no wiring, no app store. It runs in the browser, and it was built for the screen in a Tesla.
Twenty machines to choose from: recorded cars including a BAC Mono, Ferrari 458 and BMW M1 Procar, synthesised supercars from a V10 and V12 to a crossplane muscle V8 and an anti-lag rally car, everyday engines from a 1.0 three-cylinder to a diesel and a flat-four, and five that are not cars at all — a jet turbine, a radial prop plane, a steam locomotive, a big single and something alien.

- Is it free?
- Yes. No account, no sign-up, no payment and no trial. It is a web page that happens to make engine noises.
- Do I need to install an app?
- No. Open ev-engine.com in a browser and press ignition. Nothing to download, nothing in an app store.
- Does it work in a Tesla?
- Yes, that is what it was built for. Open the car's browser, go to ev-engine.com and press ignition. It runs on the centre screen and uses the car's own GPS through the browser.
- Does it work on a phone?
- Yes, on iOS and Android. If you hear nothing on an iPhone, check the physical silent switch on the side of the phone.
- Does it connect to the car or read OBD?
- No. It has no access to the car's systems and needs no adapter or wiring. Everything comes from GPS speed: acceleration, gear and revs are all inferred from how that speed changes.
- Does it need an internet connection?
- Only to load the page. After that the simulator runs entirely offline: every font, script and sound is served from this domain, and nothing is loaded from anywhere else.
- Is my location tracked or stored?
- No. Your position is read by the browser, used to work out speed, and discarded. It is never sent anywhere and never stored, on our servers or on your device.
- Do you collect any analytics?
- Yes, anonymously. Counts of things like which engines get chosen and what audio latency the browser reports, which is how the sound gets tuned for real cars. There are no cookies, no advertising, no third-party trackers, and no identifier that lasts beyond the tab, so two visits cannot be linked. To switch it off entirely, run localStorage.evengine_no_analytics = '1' in the browser console, or enable Do Not Track.
- Can I use it while driving?
- Set it up before you move. It is an audio toy, not a driving aid, and the speed it shows comes from GPS so it lags the car's own speedometer. Do not rely on it and do not operate the screen while driving.
