Ferrari 458 engine sound

A flat-plane crank is what separates this from the two V8s synthesised elsewhere on this site. Its cylinders fire at even intervals across both banks, so none of the half-order energy that gives a crossplane V8 its lope is present. The result is a hard, even note that reads as a racing engine.

Ten seconds, picked up already rolling. The gearbox works up through the ratios and then the throttle closes for the overrun. It starts at speed rather than at rest because the recordings cover a band of engine speeds, and below it the audio would be pitched down rather than played.

This is a recording rather than a model. Four looping files, on-load and off-load at low and high engine speed, crossfaded on rpm and throttle and pitch-shifted to follow engine speed.

Its files cover 5,300 to 7,700 rpm, the highest band of the three recorded cars and a deliberate one: a 458 spends its interesting life at the top. The consequence is that idle is 2.56 octaves below the lowest recording, far enough that starting a clip there would be a slowed-down tape rather than a car. The preview above therefore picks the car up already moving.

Seven ratios run from 5.8 to 33 km/h per 1000 rpm, and it shifts at 4,800. The redline is 8,900. That combination keeps it in the upper half of its range under any real acceleration, which is where the recording is native and where the engine has something to say.
