BAC Mono engine sound
Three machines in this library play recordings rather than synthesis, and the Mono is the most extreme of them. A 2.5-litre four in a single-seat car weighing about half what a hatchback does, revving to 9,000 rpm, with no bodywork between the engine and the driver.
Ten seconds, picked up already rolling. The gearbox works up through the ratios and then the throttle closes for the overrun. It starts at speed rather than at rest because the recordings cover a band of engine speeds, and below it the audio would be pitched down rather than played.
The recording approach is different from everything else here. Four looping files per car, on-load and off-load at low and high engine speed, crossfaded against rpm and throttle and pitch-shifted to track engine speed exactly. Nothing is being modelled: what you hear was made by the real engine.
That is a strength and a limit. Inside the recorded band the sound is correct in a way no synthesis reaches, because it is not an approximation of anything. Outside it the audio has to be pitched, and pitching is audible. The Mono’s files cover 3,000 to 6,500 rpm against a 9,000 redline, the narrowest usable span of the three, which is why its preview above starts already rolling rather than at idle.
The gearing is a sequential racing set: six ratios from 5.6 to 28.1 km/h per 1000 rpm, so top gear gives only 28 km/h per 1000 and 120 km/h sits near 4,300 rpm. Those are road ratios rather than the track set, chosen because the original 7,800 rpm shift point left the engine screaming in first all the way to 56 km/h.
It shifts at 5,000 rpm, higher than any synthesised preset except the V10. In the car it wants a road where you can hold a gear, and it is unbearable and wonderful in equal measure at town speeds.
