BMW M1 Procar engine sound

A racing straight six revving to 9,000 rpm, from a series that ran Formula One drivers in identical cars as a Grand Prix support race. It is the only recorded engine here with a cylinder layout the synthesised library also covers, which makes it the most useful comparison on the site.

Ten seconds, picked up already rolling. The gearbox works up through the ratios and then the throttle closes for the overrun. It starts at speed rather than at rest because the recordings cover a band of engine speeds, and below it the audio would be pitched down rather than played.

Hold this against the synthesised inline-six and the cylinder layout is the one thing they share. The synthesised car is a road GT: unevenness at 5, a long exhaust, brightness held near neutral. This is the same six cylinders with a racing exhaust, no cabin insulation and 1,800 more rpm to use.

It is a recording. Four looping files, on-load and off-load at low and high engine speed, crossfaded on rpm and throttle, pitch-shifted to track engine speed.

Its band runs from 3,200 to 8,000 rpm, the widest of the three recorded cars, so more of any given clip is native audio and less is pitched. That is why it holds up best of the three across a full acceleration run.

Five ratios from 5.6 to 24 km/h per 1000 rpm, a 5,000 rpm shift point and a 9,000 redline. Racing gearing: 120 km/h sits at 5,000 rpm, and there is no relaxed way to drive it. Top gear is shorter than first gear on the GT V12.
